My father had a an optima turbo (on my advice). That one had 274hp (they lowered the hp but increased torque for the latest generation of that motor). That car was pretty terrifying to drive fast. No steering feel, a suspension that as much confidence as a paper bag on a rainy day, and enough power to get in trouble very quickly.
I remember driving it and thinking “my god, I advised my father into a death trap”. It had a really good interior though. Very Saab-like.

Yeah I was thinking 2011 or so Camry, right before they changed up the styling. But I’ll admit I’m not all that familiar with them. If you’re looking at one a bit older, then yeah the good Mustangs are probably outside your range.
But there’s hope! Consider a first-gen G35. Sedan or coupe, RWD or AWD, manual (though not with AWD), 260-298 hp depending on the model. Well kept examples should be well within your price range.
This AWD sedan is on eBay for under $7K.

Power doesn’t necessarily make a fun car. I had a supercharged grand prix GTP (240hp/260ftlbs) that was far less fun to drive than my 170hp Subaru Legacy wagon. The camry will be boring in the turns and it probably won’t even feel fast in the straight. It will be reliable, though

You know...it’s kind of sad that the Impala has made a whole bunch of improvements to itself (like the aformentioned 300HP V6) since 2007 and the Camry hasn’t really. No pressure at all from others in the market despite being the same car they made almost 10 years ago...
That should make me not want to buy the Camry. it’s not working, though.

lol ‘soulless’. These are machines, not lifeforms. They don’t have souls.
Also, it’s easy to not consider a 200HP pony car because in 2016, it’s lame. It was lame in 2001 when I had a 200HP pony car and got outrun by Camrys, Maximas and their clones. Nothing feels worse than being outgunned by a sleepy family sedan full of toddlers and dog drool when you’re the one in a supposed-to-be-fast sports car.

right, and music has no soul because its just a collection of air molecules vibrating at specific frequencies at specific intervals. 8-)
honestly not trying to sound like a dick, but the top of the line camry in 2001 made 194 horsepower. meanwhile the only two pony cars sold at the time that made over 200 horsepower were the 4.6L Modular V8 Mustang and the LS1 powered Camaro/Firebird. if you were getting outdragged by econoboxes in either, then the problem likely isn’t the car so much as the driver. it may be worth considering practicing how to properly launch a rear-wheel drive car, understanding shift points, etc.
also not sure what market you live in, but I picked up my G35X baby hauler over a year ago for less than a non-luxurious Subaru with 40k+ miles would have cost me. not sure if that really means that G35 sedans are great value, or that Subarus are ridiculously overpriced... probably somewhere in between. but used Infinitis definitely don’t carry the price premium that used Lexus and Acura models tend to. I’ve been meaning to write up what a sleeper the G35X is - I’ve just never had the time thanks to the whole baby thing.

right, and music has no soul because...
Cars are not music. You cannot compare an medium of expression to a piece of machinery. That doesn’t work at all.
honestly not trying to sound like a dick, but I’m totally going to do that thing I just said I’m not trying to do
Fixed. Now here’s a note for your future interactions with humans; declaring to someone that you don’t mean to be condescending before you do exactly that makes people tune you out.
the top of the line camry in 2001 made 194 horsepower. meanwhile the only two pony cars sold at the time that made over 200 horsepower were the 4.6L Modular V8 Mustang and the LS1 powered Camaro/Firebird.
1) Read my previous comment again, and point out the part where I said I had ‘over’ 200HP.
2) The passage of time is a thing. The Camry and all of it’s competitors obtained the kind of power big block V8s in the malaise era used to have in a few short years from then.
3) What happened in 2001 and beyond is not at all relevant to your original suggestion, which was to buy a 200HP pony car now , here in 2016, when everybody and your grandma’s base Accord makes that kind of power and does without heavy components like a drive shaft and a solid rear axle on top of it. You cannot be serious with the idea that I’d be better of with a car that’s basically slower than everything on the market today because it has ‘soul’. No.
if you were getting outdragged by econoboxes in either, then the problem likely isn’t the car so much as the driver. it may be worth considering practicing how to properly launch a rear-wheel drive car, understanding shift points, etc.
The best launch on planet earth will not help you when your competition has almost 100 more HP than you do. Physics are a thing.
also not sure what market you live in, but I picked up my G35X baby hauler over a year ago for less than a non-luxurious Subaru with 40k+ miles would have cost me.
Great! None of that makes a G35x cheaper than the pictured Camry though. You can have one that costs as much if you’re okay with buying something at the end of it’s useful life. I’m not.

I want proof S65 isn’t Jdentarol. He appeared around the time that tool got banned again (after a mod followed him again, like wtf?) and not a single mod has bothered to step in to curb his incessant posts. I wrote to mod saying people are treating Oppo like their personal Twitter now posting anything that pops in their head.
Slant6
> Rico
06/30/2016 at 21:46 | 0 |
Well to be fair I post a lot of personal stuff here, almost like my own twitter, but I keep it mostly relevant since my life revolves around design school and other neat things.
After all, this is an off topic blog, where anything goes. By the rules you can never make a car post and be fine.
That being said, I’m fairly certain S65 is not JD. License plates of photos he takes dont geographically line up and his style is different. Something they have in common was their lust for noteriety and fame. And their poor Photoshop ability. But any kid that finds Oppo is like that (look at my posts from 2013). Is it possible, yes. But for now he seems pretty harmless, if anything annoying.
Also JD’s account is active as of today. I think we’re all just a little paranoid after we had to deal with him.
Also it should be noted that even though I was at the head of the witch-hunt on JD I am pro him coming back when he’s older. He’s just a kid that wants to fit in with us.

Nah posting off topic stuff is PERFECTLY fine, we have helped people get through some rough shit like Kroll. I mean Twitter-esque like posting every few minutes, sometimes not even typing much of anything or posting a random picture. It’s the equivalent of:
“I’m bored” - 12:45 pm
“I’m pretty hungry, I wonder what’s for dinner” - 12:53 pm
“It’s really hot today !” - 1:09 pm
“Maybe I should take a nap” - 1:20
I mean earlier when someone else brought it up I looked into how many posts he’s made the past few days and he’s averaging like 12 a day. I’m not saying every post on Oppo should be FP quality or something but other people are also pointing it out that he’s od’ing.
He might just be a kid like JD but guess what I was a kid like them, I’m 26 I grew up with the Internet and LIVED on forums as a young teen, especially game forums and console forums. I never acted like this and instead always tried to act as mature as possible so no one would suspect I was actually 13 yr old posting on the Microsoft Xbox Live forums. They can’t use that as a crutch because I lived it too, I’m not some 68 year old who just learned what LOL means. I just think a mod should mention that he should focus on quality not quantity or whatever analogy fits.
Slant6
> Rico
06/30/2016 at 22:24 | 1 |
As much as this pains me to say, it might just be a generational thing. These kids don’t know how to internet respectfully.
S65, I think for now deserves the benefit of the doubt. So far he’s been annoying, but not offensive. But people have their eye on him, so if he messes up something will happen.
I kinda wish he is JD, that would mean he took some of our advise to heart. S65 is decidedly better.
